Mission 15 - Satellite Photo
Mosul - The al Qaeda Connection

Mosul is situated on the west bank of the Tigris, some 250 miles north of Baghdad. Agricultural trade and oil exploration are the city’s two main occupations. Turkey attempted to lay claim to the area during the British occupation and mandate of World War I, but the League of Nations officially declared it part of Iraq in 1926.

Home to the doomed hideout of Uday and Qusay Hussein, Mosul is the third largest city in Iraq. Out of the estimated 1,739,800 people, most of Mosul’s regional occupants are Kurdish, while the city center is largely Arab.

The older section of Mosul has abundant winding streets, the center of which is full of narrow alleys and mud-plastered houses. But more of the city is characterized as a prosperous-looking suburb. Large concrete houses are surrounded by walled gardens, and one may find some extravagant mansions with dramatic balconies and entrances.
