In Samarra, two gunmen on motorcycles open fire on American vehicles and then take cover among children leaving school. 11 insurgents are killed in the ensuing firefight.

Monday, December 15, 2003
Two suicide car bombings kill nine people and injure 25 at two police stations in and around Baghdad.

Tuesday, December 16, 2003
10 Iraqis die and 20 are injured in al-Bayaa after a truck full of explosives, earmarked for a Baghdad police station, collides with a bus in an intersection.

Guerrillas ambush a U.S. patrol north of Baghdad, sparking a battle that kills 11 of the attackers. Hours later, US troops return to the location and arrest an Iraqi rebel leader and 78 others in a raid.

Wednesday, December 17, 2003
Armored vehicles and Apache helicopters back US troops during door-to-door searches in Samarra. The massive, pre-dawn raid against guerrilla resistance results in 12 arrests.

Four people are injured in a pro-Saddam rally in Mosul.

Christmas Day is marked by guerrillas with rockets and mortar bombs firing on Baghdad hotels used by Westerners, embassies, and an apartment block. A hole is blown through the front wall of the Turkish mission, and windows are shattered.

Two US soldiers are killed in a mortar attack on a US camp near Baquba.

Polish troops are attacked with bombs and small-arms fire near Mahawil.

Attackers shoot mortar fire into the US-led occupation headquarters, Saddam’s former palace on the Tigris River.

US forces use aircraft and artillery to pound suspected guerrilla hideouts on the outskirts of Baghdad for a third consecutive night.

Friday, December 26, 2003
An Iraqi tribal chief and American ally is murdered in the northern city of Mosul.

A roadside bomb explodes near a convoy in Baquba, killing one US soldier and wounding another. A second soldier is killed trying to defuse a bomb outside town.

Rebels ambush a patrol in Mosul, and three US troops are wounded.

Insurgents open fire on a police station in Ramadi. One officer and one of the attackers are killed in an ensuing gunfight.

Saturday, December 27, 2003
Guerrillas unleash a coordinated assault on military bases and the governor's office in Karbala, killing 13 people. Six soldiers from the U.S.-led occupation force and six Iraqi police officers die. 172 are wounded in the attacks. Rebels detonate three homemade bombs that set a fuel depot on fire, injuring six US soldiers.

Sunday, December 28, 2003
The local governor, among others, is wounded in Karbala when a suicide bomber blows himself up near city hall.

Two coalition members are killed in separate roadside bombing attacks. One soldier dies in a US convoy near Fallujah, where three others are wounded. One is killed in a Baghdad bombing.

US troops on a cordon and knock operation in Mosul raid a house and are attacked by members of Ansar al-Islam. Two US soldiers are wounded. Three rebels are killed. Authorities seize a weapons cache and detain six non-combative occupants.
