Mission 21 -Chronology
Korea: The Enemy Within

Sunday, September 13, 1996

A North Korean 60-foot, 70-ton mini-submarine leaves the port of Wonsan, North Korea and heads toward Kangnung, South Korea on a covert mission to gather information about South Korean naval and air bases in the region.

Tuesday, September 17, 1996 According to one theory, the submarine experiences engine problems and begins to drift toward the coast, eventually becoming grounded on a reef some 50 feet from Anin beach. An alternative is that the crew simply makes a navigation error and grounds.

Wednesday, September 18, 1996 A taxi cab driver spots the North Koreans abandoning the sub. He calls local police and military personnel.

60,000 South Korean troops are gathered in a manhunt for the infiltrators. The search involves the army and police while citizens prepare food for the search teams.

11 North Koreans are found dead on a mountain. All have been shot in the head, and it is surmised they were executed by their comrades (all dead were sailors, not commandos). An alternative theory is that they died in a suicide pact to avoid capture.

One spy is captured while trying to pass through a village. He is disguised as a South Korean villager.

Thursday, September 19, 1996 20 miles northwest of where the submarine landed, three shootouts take place. Two groups of three North Koreans are killed, as well as one lone spy. One South Korean soldier is injured.

Friday, September 20, 1996 60,000 soldiers and police using helicopters and sniffer dogs continue to comb the hillsides and coast. One North Korean agent escapes capture by hurling a grenade at his pursuers.

Saturday, September 21, 1996 Two North Korean agents shoot and kill a South Korean paratrooper pursuing them. The agents are last seen near the top of a 2,900 foot mountain but manage to escape capture.

Loudspeakers on army vehicles broadcast the North Korean detainee pleading with his comrades to surrender ďand find a new life along with me in the Republic of Korea." There are no takers.

Sunday, September 22, 1996 Two North Korean agents are killed on the fifth day of the massive manhunt, one in the morning hours and the other, discovered near Chilsung Mountain, later in the day.

Monday, September 23, 1996 North Korea demands the return of its submarine, including the dead entombed in it. South Korea refuses its release.

Sunday, December 29, 1996 North Korea formally states its regret for the incident.
