Mission 18 - Overview
al Qaeda: The Battle for Mosul

On June 24, 2004, Mosul is rocked by a series of car and truck bombs that leave more than 100 people dead and 300 wounded. It is part of a country-wide assault on the Iraqi government by insurgents loyal to al Qaeda associate Abu Musab al Zarqawi.

The Iraqi National Guard receives word that the terrorists have taken over the Sheik Fatih station, and as they attempt to recapture it, they are repulsed by gunfire coming from a mosque across the street. So they call in the Strykers.

The men from Blackhawk Company of the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment - a Stryker brigade combat team -- fight their way through the gunfire in an intense, hour-long battle, and take back the police station. ING troops then move in and clear the mosque.

Mosul's governor imposes an overnight curfew, and Coalition forces begin a counterattack that lasts for days. They obliterate a Zarqawi safehouse in Fallujah, arrest 27 suspects, and seize arms and material from the insurgents. But Zarqawi is never caught, and he has put a price on the heads of Iraqi leaders, who have, in turn, vowed to capture him. The fight continues.

Just how has the threat from Zarqawi changed, and where do we go from here? Major General Thomas L. Wilkerson (ret.) joins Jacki Schechner to discuss ongoing operations against this terrorist mastermind, the future of Iraqi security forces, and what it means for their country and ours. Then Dante Anderson, Kuma's Head of Product Development, will brief you on tactics to use to clear out the hornetís nest in Mosul, and what moves to practice before you hit the pavement. The enemy has staked out extremely well-defended positions on these streets, and they are determined to hold their own. Unless you can defeat them.
